Donate In-Kind Products
The Red Cross is unable to accept small, individual donations or collections of items such as clothing, food or cleaning supplies. The cost to sort, package and distribute these types of donations to a disaster victims is almost always greater than the cost of purchasing the items locally. Because of these cost and logistical concerns, we recommend that you support your community by donating these items to an organization that is equipped to put them to the best possible local use.

Offers of sizeable, bulk donations are reviewed to determine if they meet a current need for disaster victims that can be addressed by the Red Cross. Bulk donations are typically new, shrink-wrapped and palletized items, and they are transported by the donor.

Please view our American National Red Cross Policy on in-kind donations. If you would like to discuss this type of donation, please contact Terry Hickey at 517-702-3325.

Bulk donations of food can be accepted at our Mid-Michigan Food Bank. If you would like to discuss this type of donation, please contact Dave Karr at 517-702-3359.

  • Can the Red Cross provide free flights through airline agreements for people requiring travel due to medical needs, family deaths or other reasons?
The miles donated through these agreements are accepted and utilized solely for disaster- related travel purposes in support of Red Cross disaster response. Travel assistance to families that have been affected by disasters is handled through individual case work and needs assessments, performed by national disaster personnel or local Red Cross chapters.
Often, the Red Cross receives requests to use these donated air miles from individuals in need of free travel assistance due to a medical or other personal emergency, such as a death in the family. Due to the restrictions mentioned above, however, miles donated to the Red Cross cannot be opened up to individuals or groups with travel needs that are beyond the scope of the Red Cross mission.
There are, however, other organizations whose mission supports certain types of emergency travel for individuals and families in need. Provided below is a link to an assortment of travel assistance organizations that can be used as referrals for individuals seeking donated travel for needs that are beyond what the Red Cross can support. Provided for each organization is information on the scope of their work (whether they provide services nationally or just in a particular region), a description of their services and mission, and phone numbers and Web site address (when available).
Some agencies listed specialize in the type of travel assistance they provide, such as medical transport only, while others will arrange emergency transportation for a number of crisis situations. Refer to the descriptions provided in the link below or the agency Web sites to determine the specific travel needs each supports. **Please note that these are referrals only and do not guarantee assistance from these organizations in any way.
  • INFORMATION ON TRAVEL ASSISTANCE CHARITIES
Will the Red Cross ship my items to areas that I have an interest in if they have free shipping resources available?
The American Red Cross is only able to handle the coordination and shipping of items that are to be used as part of its core programs and services, and have been identified as needed items that the Red Cross will distribute or provide. The Red Cross is not authorized to ship items for other purposes outside its mission nor can it serve as an authorized 501(c)3 or "consignee" in order to assist someone in getting items into a country or area requiring customs clearance. There are some government and other programs that provide free shipping overseas through an application and review process, and the public is encouraged to research those options.
